And when this is a great matter, decisive from Allah and His Messenger, the doer of it has a great need for purification. It is worthy of its greatness that he should not attain the utmost purity except by asking the Prophet ﷺ. And they did not do that, which indicates the evil of their inner selves and the hardness of their hearts. They are like the propped-up wood, in that they have no fruit and no purity at all. By His saying: ﴿And when it is said to them﴾ [meaning] from any speaker: ﴿Come﴾, meaning raise yourselves, striving in that by coming to the noblest of creation, whose position remains high due to the greatness of his status. ﴿He will ask forgiveness for you﴾, meaning he seeks forgiveness for you specifically after you turn away from your sin because of this lie that you insist upon. And for the two preceding factors, the second of them was acted upon (p-84) as is preferred from the school of the Basri scholars. So he raised his saying: ﴿The Messenger of Allah﴾, meaning the closest of creation to the greatest King, who has no equal in His generosity. ﴿They turned away their heads﴾ [meaning they did] the turning with utmost intensity and abundance, which is the turning to another direction in aversion and arrogance, and showing enmity and repulsion. They exaggerated in it to an extent that indicates they are overwhelmed by the severity of what is in their hearts of sickness. ﴿And you see them﴾, meaning with the eye of insight, ﴿turning away﴾, meaning they turn away in a vile manner from what they were called to, renewing that every time they were called to it. The clause is in the position of the second object for ﴿you saw﴾. ﴿And they are arrogant﴾, meaning they are firmly established in arrogance regarding what they were called to and regarding humbling themselves in the place of seeking forgiveness. They, due to the severity of their hardness, do not perceive the ugliness of what they are upon nor do they find guidance to its remedy. And if others guide them and alert them, they are not alerted. It has been narrated that when the Qur'an was revealed about them, their tribes from the believers came to them and said: Woe to you! You have exposed yourselves and destroyed yourselves. So come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and turn to him and ask him to seek forgiveness for you. But they refused that, so Allah revealed this verse. It has been narrated that Ibn Ubayy, their leader, turned his head and said to them: You advised me to believe, so I believed, and you advised me to give the zakat of my wealth, so I did. And there remains only that you command me to prostrate to Muhammad.
