Commentary
And when the decree was: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said to them in compliance with our command that, they did not wish for it in the present time, as a confirmation from us of his prophethood and as a means to incapacitate and realize the miracles of his message. This was indicated by what he added to his saying (p-59) that surely confirms his truthfulness by their confirmation of him by refraining from what he informed them that they would not do: ﴿And they will not wish for it﴾, meaning in the future. And he sufficed with this in expression without needing to mention that their claim here is that they are allies, not all allies, as it is less than the claim of exclusivity in the Hereafter. Also, the guardianship is for the purpose of intercession to paradise, and it does not necessitate exclusivity in the blessing, as the evidence is that the world is not exclusively for the allies who are truly granted guardianship; rather, the righteous and the wicked share in it. And when he informed them of their lack of wishing, he widened the scope for them to realize the intended meaning and said: ﴿Never﴾. It was known that the reason for this is their knowledge that they are enemies of Allah, so he said: ﴿Because of what they have sent forth﴾. And since most actions are by hand, he attributed everything to it because it became an expression of ability, so he said: ﴿Their hands﴾, meaning from the sins that surrounded them and did not leave them any share in the Hereafter by their knowledge.
And when the decree was a consequence of this: So that they do not say: We have submitted to everything said about the wrongdoers, we are not among them, for Allah is All-Knowing of them in their actions and intentions. The addition to this is his saying, which is attached to the description, generalizing and informing that the description of what they have sent forth of wrongdoing ﴿And Allah﴾, meaning the One who has complete knowledge and ability over all things ﴿is All-Knowing﴾, meaning possessing profound knowledge encompassing them - thus was the original, but he said: ﴿Of the wrongdoers﴾ (p-60) generalizing and attaching it to the description, not to the essence. The meaning is that He is All-Knowing of the people of this established description among them and others, so He will reward them for their wrongdoing, and they know that. And the greatest confirmer is Allah - and who is more truthful than Allah [in statement] - in this that they were never fought except that they retreated to their fortresses and villages as mentioned in Surah Al-Hashr. This indicated that they are more eager for worldly life than those who associated partners, as mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, for they know that they will end up in the Fire. And the Arabs believe that they will not be resurrected, so they do not fear what comes after death, and they are brave, advancing towards death as Al-Antarah ibn Shaddad Al-Absi said:
The death frightens me as if I have become far from the threat of death.
So I answered it that death is a well from which I must be quenched.
So perish your life, O you who have no father, and know that I am a man who will die if I do not kill.
