Commentary
And when their saying that they are the allies of Allah and His beloved ones is far from this example, he began what indicates the correctness of the example without a doubt. He said, turning away from them and commanding those who denied him with their rebuke: "Say," meaning, O Messenger, who they are certain that he is the Messenger of Allah: "O you who are Jews," meaning, you who adhere to Judaism. And when the truth is clear to anyone who has even the slightest grasp of it, they were deserving of returning from their obstinacy. He expressed it with a tool of doubt and said: "If you claim," meaning, you said a statement that is subject to denial, and therefore you confirmed it: "that you are allies of Allah," meaning, the Most High King, with whom no one has authority. He has chosen you with that as a special characteristic initiated from among, meaning, the lowest rank of the ranks of "people." The guardianship did not extend beyond that low rank to anyone among you other than you. Rather, He has chosen you with that over everyone who has the capacity for movement, especially the unlettered ones. "So wish for death," and inform yourselves of that for the fewness from the abode of trial to the place of honor and blessings. "If you are," meaning, a firmly established state, "truthful," meaning, deeply rooted in yourselves in truthfulness. For indeed, one of the signs of love is the longing for the beloved. And among the volunteering in it is that whoever is in hardship and has a guardian who has promised him upon reaching him the comfort that is not tainted by harm, he wishes to be transferred to his guardian. It has been narrated that he, blessings and peace be upon him, said to them: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, none of you says it except that he chokes on his saliva." So none of them said it, knowing that he is truthful, blessings and peace be upon him, and they did not say it nor believe it out of their obstinacy.
