Commentary
And when He educated His believing servants in Al-Mumtahana about what harms the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and completed it in the line by warning against the deviation of hearts for those who harmed His Prophet Musa, may peace and blessings be upon him. And I know that He, glorified and exalted is He, gathered all manners in this book which He revealed to their Prophet, whom He made the Seal of the Prophets and the noblest of the chosen ones. He indicated His great virtue by teaching the ignorant. He indicated His painful punishment as a completion of the guidance to His astonishing power by making the scholar ignorant through the deviation of his heart and the loss of his understanding due to his despair of the Hereafter for His anger upon him. This is a warning against falling into what necessitates misguidance after knowledge. So He said in response to one who seemed to say: This is His virtue over the ignorant, so how is His action with the world? He said as a warning to one who purifies himself but does not purify himself by saying what he does not do. He carries the book while he carries it without knowledge of it, so that what was done to the Jews, of humiliation in this world and disgrace [and punishment] in the Hereafter, is done to him due to the deviation of hearts and the encirclement of sins, and he becomes worse than what was said about him.
Whoever misses knowledge and fails to attain wealth, That one is like a dog on a boundary other than this.
The example of those... And when knowledge, especially divine knowledge, must be rejoiced in and desired from any source, his saying is established for the unknown and a protection for his noble name from being mentioned regarding disobedience: "They were charged with the Torah," meaning they were tasked and obliged to bear the book which Allah gave to the Children of Israel through the tongue of Musa, may peace and blessings be upon him, in that He taught them it, glorified is He, and charged them with preserving its words from alteration and forgetfulness, and its meanings from distortion and confusion, and its limits and rulings from neglect and loss.
And when they left carrying it while it was from Allah and through the tongue of a man from them who is the greatest in their eyes and the most honored to them, in kindness to them in the utmost distance, especially with the long time that facilitates its preservation, made easy for them to contemplate it and to know its measure, He expressed with the tool of distance and said: "Then they did not carry it," meaning they preserved its words but did not act upon what is in it of the command to follow 'Isa, may peace and blessings be upon him, when he came to them, then Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, when he came. So it is harmful to them by its testimony against them, casting them into the fire without any benefit at all. "Like the example of..." meaning the like of the example of "the donkey" which is the most foolish of animals. So it is an example [of] ignorance, while it is "carrying books," meaning books of knowledge that reveal matters that benefit the wise, a collection of scrolls, which is the great book that reveals what is in it.
And when the example that encompasses both of them - which is the aspect of similarity - is a person heavily burdened and very tired with something that is of no benefit to him at all, then it is a harm to him, a burden that cannot be understood what it is that carries it except that he is tired and does not know whether it is a donkey or books. He expressed his saying using the tool that is for encompassing blame, warning humanity not to take lightly any of the rulings of the Qur'an, so that they become a worse example than the people of the Book, and they would be below the donkey because their Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, is greater and their Book is higher and more magnificent. He said: 'Wretched is the example of the people,' meaning those who have great strength in attempting what they desire, yet they were not given any excuse for their inability. 'Those who denied,' meaning they acted upon knowledge with obstinacy from them and disbelief in 'the signs of Allah,' meaning the indications of the Greatest King upon His Messengers, especially Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and all that pleases Him, like them. For indeed, like them have guaranteed to define that they have gathered with the donkey in a description that is the inner spirit, which is the pure harm that has no benefit in any way compared to the most beneficial of things, which is what indicated Allah and guaranteed the happiness of both abodes. And this example, even though it is a text regarding the Jews, is for all readers of evil from every sect due to their sharing with them in the aspect of similarity, just as the example of the dog in Al-A'raf is in this manner. And it is as if He, glorified and exalted is He, did not explicitly include this nation in that, indicating its preservation from being left to itself, just as He granted it knowledge along with its illiteracy from it and from its Messenger without leaving them to writing or any advancement of knowledge or any effort for anything.
And when the estimation is: they deserved the description with all the blame because they were wronged with the greatest injustice, it was followed by His saying: 'And Allah,' meaning the One who has all the attributes of perfection, does not guide them - thus was the original, but He expressed it in a generalization and a connection of the ruling with the description, so He said: 'does not guide the people,' meaning He does not create guidance in the hearts of the strong ones who deliberately chose deviation: 'the wrongdoers,' meaning those who deliberately chose injustice by opposing the guidance which is the clear statement that left no ambiguity until injustice became a firmly established attribute for them.
