Commentary

And when his purification for them, along with their illiteracy and ignorance, was a remarkable matter in its indication of the completeness of ability, it was further emphasized by including many from other nations like them in illiteracy. So he said: ﴿and others﴾ meaning, and his sending among others ﴿from them﴾ in illiteracy, not in Arabic. ﴿who have not yet joined them﴾ meaning, at a time from the past in a characteristic from the characteristics. Rather, they are the most ignorant of people, like the common folk of the Magians, Jews, Christians, and the Berbers, and others from the groups of non-Arabs who are the most tongue-tied of people, the dullest in mind, and the most rigid in nature and character. And Allah will include them with them in knowledge and purification.

And when their not being included with them in the past might suggest something regarding ability, and their inclusion with them in the future is the utmost indication of ability, he said: ﴿and He is﴾ meaning, while the case is that He alone ﴿the Mighty﴾ who is capable of all things and nothing overcomes Him, so He purifies whom He wills and teaches him what He desires from any group he is from, even if he is the dullest of the people of that group. For all things are in His hand ﴿the Wise﴾. So when He intends something that is in accordance with His legislation and command, He makes it in the most perfect and trustworthy forms, so it cannot be undone. And whatever He intends, however it may be, it must be executed, and there is no way to reject it. And the intended meaning of the others is the non-Arabs, and that Allah, the Exalted, will include them with the Arabs. Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, and Sa'id ibn Jubair, may Allah be pleased with him, also said, and this is a narration from Lait from Mujahid, and it is supported by what was narrated from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man asked about them when the Surah of Friday was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, placed his hand on Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: "If faith were at the Pleiades, men from these would attain it."
