Commentary
And when he informed about their rejection of the message, he explained it by saying: ﴿They intend﴾, meaning they bring about the intention of their rejection of the message by their fabrication ﴿to extinguish﴾, meaning in order to extinguish ﴿the light of Allah﴾, meaning the King for whom nothing is comparable ﴿with their mouths﴾, meaning by what they say of lies, which has no source other than the mouths, because there is no belief in it in the hearts, as it cannot be conceived by a rational person. They are in this like those who blow at the sun, intending that their blowing will erase its essence and diminish its beauty. So he likened their intention to conceal the Qur'an by their denial and all their plots to one who intends to extinguish the sun by blowing at it; he is in the utmost and most misguided of misguidance:
And in the toil of one who envies the sun its light ∗∗∗ and strives to bring it harm.
Thus, the limitation of the action indicates that all their intention is directed towards this purpose and that they have no intention other than that. It is not appropriate for them to have an intention because they are servants, and intention should only belong to the master, so the intention of the servant must follow it, thus it becomes an obedience to his intention. It is as if he has no intention; this is more eloquent than what is in the Surah of Al-Bara'ah because this is its outcome.
And when he informed about the reason for their intention and pointed to it, which is their matter after he informed about their rejection of the truth and incited against them by informing about their misguidance, he added to that by saying, making evident and not concealed, a reminder of all the attributes of majesty and honor: ﴿And Allah﴾, meaning the One who has no opponent for the completeness of His greatness. And when this Surah is the outcome of the Surah of Al-Bara'ah, in which he informed that He refuses except to complete His light, he informed in this of the outcome of that, which is the stability of the completeness of the light and its continuity, because this is the nature of the King who has no equal; when He intends something, how about when He sends a messenger and says: ﴿Completing﴾. This meaning supports the saying of the majority that it is a city after the support by mentioning jihad, for its obligation was after the migration, and the apparent arrangement of it upon the trial that was revealed in the Battle of Al-Fath indicates that it is also after Al-Bara'ah in revelation. And when the light is for the manifestation of the forms of things after their obscurity, it is a cause for placing things in their most perfect locations, and what comes from Allah of knowledge is likewise, it was made evident, so He released His name upon it and said: ﴿His light﴾; thus, the concealment of anyone by denying it or the intention to extinguish it does not harm it. He added to that by saying: ﴿Even if the disbelievers dislike﴾, meaning its completion for them ﴿the disbelievers﴾, meaning those firmly rooted in the attribute of disbelief, striving in defending against it.
