Commentary
(p-9) And when the neglect of the command of Allah, the Most High, and the heedlessness of something leads to abandoning it, resulting in negligence towards it and a breach of etiquette from its etiquettes, it necessitates being in the ranks of Satan and separating from the party of the Most Merciful. This would cause harm to the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and that would lead to all misery because it is deserving of dragging one into greater sins until the sins surround and permit calamities. There was for the reminder of the observable things and the occurring matters what is not for others in discipline and the source of intimidation. He mentioned what was for the Children of Israel as a warning from the like of their condition, so that they would not fall into their punishment when they hesitated from what they were commanded regarding the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis. Allah, the Most High, was angry with their action, so He called them wicked and struck them with wandering for forty years. He caused every one of them who hesitated in that to die during those forty years, so none of them entered Bayt al-Maqdis. They were forbidden the land which they hesitated to conquer, which is after Mecca and Medina, the best of the lands of Allah, the Most High, and the migration of their father Ibrahim, may peace and blessings be upon him, and the places of their forefathers, Ishaq and Yaqub, may peace and blessings be upon them. And it is the purest of the earth, and the most abundant in goodness and blessings, along with what they were in of distress and hardship from the wandering, which is expulsion from the presence of Allah due to what He intended - as indicated by the expression of its time in years - to what they left behind of bad remembrance and disgraceful mention until the end of time. So Allah, the Most High, said: 'And when' as a conjunction to what you can infer: remember what some of you did - as I indicated at the beginning of these verses (p-10) from the etiquettes of warning the disbelievers regarding what may prevent the conquest or be a cause for its difficulty or [for] the destruction of many of My servants whom I created in the best form from the believers and others, or from fleeing from the disbelievers during confrontation, or hesitating from meeting during the call to it. This harmed the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, whose harm from you is harm to Allah. So He was patient with you and accepted with His profound mercy towards you and compassion for you from you. And He concluded what He admonished you with by sending His call, glorified and exalted is He, with what is the lowest of the ranks in faith, in comparison to His declaration upon the Children of Israel of wickedness with the description indicating firmness: 'And remember when' [Musa] said to his people - and although he was one of them - he had strength over what they attempted: 'O my people,' appealing to them and urging them to please their Lord, 'Why do you harm me?' meaning, you renew your harm with the continuity of negligence in the command of Allah and hesitating from the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis while I say about Allah that you will conquer it if you obey Him and that Allah has sworn to your forefathers that you will surely conquer it.
And when this interrogative denial necessitates an expectation of what will come after it from the necessity of glorification instead of harm, and the veneration and submission is the place of pause and refusal, he said, confirming with the letter of affirmation the content of the words: ﴿And indeed﴾ meaning, while you ﴿know﴾ meaning, you have certainly known with its renewal for you at every moment by the renewal of its causes with what I have brought you of miracles and with the preserving Book for you from deviation (p-11) ﴿that I am the Messenger of Allah﴾ meaning the Greatest King who has no equal, and His Messenger is also to be glorified and respected, not that His majesty is violated and disrespected ﴿to you﴾ I do not say anything to you except about Him, nor do I speak out of desire. Therefore, my disobedience is His disobedience, although I have said nothing to you except that it is complete, and if you are certain of its contradiction, then it is His disobedience, and there is no reason for it at all except the baseness of the natures.
And when He showed mercy to them and pleaded with them and reminded them of what they know of His Messenger-hood and His connection with Allah by what they witnessed of the signs which are the greatest kindness to them, He knew that they were close to disobedience. So he said, expressing that with the letter 'fa' as a cause for this saying which is worthy of causing steadfastness and following up and bringing closer: ﴿So when they deviated﴾ meaning their deviation was confirmed from near to the commands of Allah in the Book that came to them by their refusal to accept His command in proceeding towards the conquest ﴿Allah caused their hearts to deviate﴾ meaning He who has all authority ﴿from stability﴾, and the gathering of the multitude indicates that there was only a little who remained steadfast among them, so He defeated them before their enemies and struck them with bewilderment because they transgressed the command of Allah. [So Allah] - does not guide them, thus attributing the sin to them and the punishment to Him, even if all of it was done by Him as a teaching for His servants in etiquette and informing them that their voluntary actions are attributed to them as their acquisition, and it establishes the proof against them for their lack of knowledge of the outcome. ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning the Greatest King who has profound wisdom because He possesses all the attributes of perfection (p-12) ﴿does not guide﴾ meaning with success after the guidance of clarification ﴿the disobedient people﴾ meaning those deeply entrenched in disobedience who have the strength of attempt, so weakness did not carry them to disobedience. So beware that you do not become like them in determination, lest you equal them in the punishments of crimes - it has ended.
