Commentary
And when that was destructive, the addressed ones were shown mercy by His magnifying it so that they might save themselves by refraining from it. So He said: ﴿It is great﴾, and He intended by it astonishment, which is the magnification of the matter in the hearts of the listeners. This is because astonishment only occurs in a matter that is outside of its counterparts and forms. He explained what he meant by indicating its purity in being detestable by saying: ﴿Detestable﴾, meaning extremely great, and how great it is of hatred; it is the most intense hatred. He increased in its ugliness and intensified the aversion to it by saying: ﴿With Allah﴾, meaning the Greatest King, who belittles every arrogant one in His presence. And when He conveyed the utmost in its ugliness, the soul longed for what was attributed to that, so He said: ﴿That you say﴾, meaning greatness from that aspect, that your saying ﴿What you do not do﴾ may occur at a time among the times or a state among the states. Al-Qushayri said: [It is said]: Allah did not threaten for a slip with what He threatened for this - this is the end. And all that they mentioned regarding its cause is valid for causation. Some of them said: If we knew the most beloved deeds to Allah, we would strive in it. Then they turned away on the day of Uhud, and some of them hesitated in jihad. And the case of Suhayb, may Allah be pleased with him, who was killed on the day of Badr, was a man who harmed the Muslims and inflicted harm upon them. Another claimed that he killed him, which amazed the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. Umar and Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, may Allah be pleased with them, said to Suhayb, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, informed that you killed him. Suhayb, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I only killed him for Allah and for His Messenger. So Umar and Abdur-Rahman, may Allah be pleased with them, informed the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who said: Is that so, Abu Yahya? He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. And the adherence of the hypocrites to the rulings of Islam, and their failing in significant matters, and likewise the story of Hatib, may Allah be pleased with him.
