Commentary
And when he completed his admonition to them with what is most beneficial and closest to their righteousness, they acted. This was difficult due to what humanity is naturally inclined to, which is love for their kin and compassion towards them. Therefore, the souls yearned for some relief of a kind. He followed it with a delay in what he intended, Haatib, may Allah be pleased with him, by another means that he could reach. He spoke in the manner of kings, using symbols for what they desire, so that the one who is promised is satisfied with it. Indeed, that symbol is greater for him than the decisive statement from others, due to the greatness they possess, which necessitates purity from anything that may taint it with a flaw. This is greater in faith in the unseen, for the promises remain between fear and hope, in response to one who might say: How can there be salvation from such an occurrence when, O Lord of this abode, it is based on the wisdom of causes? 'Perhaps Allah' means you are worthy of hoping for the King who encompasses everything in ability and knowledge 'to make' through causes you do not know 'between you and' that is, in all the boundary that separates the two groups or between every two individuals from the two groups 'those whom you opposed' meaning by opposing in religion 'from them' that is, from those who opposed you with what they previously possessed from the people of Makkah. 'Affection' and He made that the year of victory, fulfilling what He, glorified and exalted is He, hoped for. He established His divine tradition that whoever I opposed in it, He made the outcome of that to a great authority. And whoever I neglected in boycotting in it, glorified and exalted is He, He established him as an adversary for you.
And when the decree was: So Allah is a companion to you, He followed it with a reminder to them of what He, glorified and exalted is He, possesses of greatness, His saying: 'And Allah' meaning the One who has complete encompassing: 'is capable' meaning He is fully capable of everything He desires. He is able to turn hearts and ease the difficult. So when hope was completed, there remained only the bitterness of sin. He followed it with a soothing for the hearts from what these verses were revealed because of it, His saying: 'And Allah' meaning the One who possesses all attributes of perfection: 'is Forgiving' meaning He erases the essence of sins and their effects. 'Merciful' He honors the sinners when He wills with repentance, then with the reward of the utmost honor. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: 'The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, appointed Abu Sufyan, may Allah be pleased with him, over some of Yemen. When the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, passed away, he came and met Dhul-Hijjar who had turned back and fought him. He was the first to fight against apostasy.' So that affection after enmity.
