Commentary
And when He mentioned - glorified is He - some of this earthly and heavenly dominion, He followed it - as has been mentioned at the beginning of the surah - with the unique creation that encompasses all of the dominion, which is man. This indicates the perfection of power over all that He wills, nullifying by the difference between the beginning of creation and the end of lifetimes what they believed regarding light and darkness, the sun and the moon, and others; because one of them has no choice in anything that comes from it. Rather, it is subjugated and overpowered as is felt and known. He said: "And He is" meaning: no one other than Him "the One who created you" meaning: and you are in the utmost disparity in height, stature, color, shape, and other characteristics that He - glorified is He - arranged according to what His wisdom necessitated "from one soul" then He took from it its mate, then He caused you to branch forth from both of them.
And when most people in this worldly life act as if they are doing the work of one who does not change or pass away, and they will not be on the brink of passing away as long as there is a remnant of life in it, He said: "So a place of settlement" meaning: it caused that from you is a place of settlement on the earth - this is according to the reading of Ibn Kathir and Ibn Umar, and with a kasra on the qaf it is the name of a doer, and the meaning in the reading of the others with a fatha is the name of a place "And for you in the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time" [Al-A'raf: 24].
And when those in the Barzakh have had the veil lifted from them, they are certain of the Hour without acting contrary to that. Likewise, those in the loins and the womb - He expressed in a way that indicates the lack of stability, saying: "And a deposit" meaning: in the loins or wombs or in the belly of the earth. This indicates that the difference from each of them - despite the fact that all are from one soul - points to the able and chosen one, no one other than Him can reverse anything of that. And all of that is guaranteed in the two verses at the beginning of the surah. He preceded the morning and the night and their relation due to their precedence in creation, then He followed it with the creation of man according to what has been mentioned at the beginning of the surah. And He mentioned here that He made that clay into one soul from which all humans branched forth, with their differences therein and in other things.
And when He mentioned this unique creation and detailed it in these admirable aspects, it was a place for anticipating the warning about it. He said: "Indeed, We have detailed" [Al-An'am: 97] meaning: by Our greatness "the signs" [Al-An'am: 97] meaning: We have increased their clarification in this unique creation in the stages of creation and the phases of craftsmanship, sometimes by having a human from dust, and at other times by bringing forth the female from the male, and sometimes by branching from the male and female what cannot be counted nor gathered by news from the sperm to birth to old age.
And when the creation of people from one soul and their arrangement in those very different aspects is the most delicate and precise craftsmanship, that requires contemplation and the use of intelligence and careful observation, He said: "for a people who understand" meaning: they have the capacity for understanding and intelligence.
