And when they denied that the dead can feel anything after death or understand speech, and the estimation was - as indicated by the context - that the angels take their souls, no one is able to prevent them. He says to them: 'Indeed, you have seen our angels, whom we informed you at the beginning of the Surah that when they are seen, it is the decisive judgment and the definitive command that has no delay in it.' He referred to what was the cause of their arrogance from gathering upon misguidance and being pious with wealth: 'And certainly you have come to us,' meaning: for the greatness we have with death, which is indicative of the completeness of our knowledge and the perfection of our power, certainly. And it indicated the completeness of greatness and that what is meant by their coming with death is His saying: 'Individually,' meaning: separately, not one of you is with another, and they are alone regarding everything that prevented you from following our messengers. 'As We created you,' meaning: with that greatness by which We caused you to die, exactly as it was the first time in being alone, weakness, and poverty. So where is your gathering that you used to be arrogant with! 'And you left what We granted you,' meaning: We made you possess wealth and enabled you to manage it as a blessing upon you to reach Our pleasure. So you thought that it was yours by right, and you turned away from Us and exchanged what indicated (p-193) our greatness for the opposite of that by belittling Our commands. 'Behind your backs,' so what has availed you what you used to be arrogant with.
And when the mention of the separation is in something that indicates its proximity in general and its presence, even if in the mind; because it is said: 'Between me and such-and-such,' and 'So-and-so was between us,' and similar expressions that indicate presence - he said, warning of the removal of that even by passing through the mind and occurring in thought due to the intensity of preoccupation. 'Between you' thus ascribed the extreme disconnection to the separation. If the separation is cut off, what was in it of the causes that used to bring about the connection is also cut off, so that none of them remains connected to the other; because what is between them has become like a trench due to the severance of the very separation, so reaching each other is not possible. This is according to the reading of the majority with the raising. And this example is the meaning of the reading of Nafi, Al-Kisai, and Hafs from Asim with the lowering as an adverbial. And when the meaning returned to the cutting off of the connection, between the cause of that, which is the removal of the support that they used to rely upon, He said: 'And it has gone astray from you' meaning: it has gone and become invalid 'what you used to claim' meaning: from all those falsehoods.
