89They are those whom We have given the Book and wisdom and prophethood. So, if these people disbelieve this (concept of Prophet-hood), then (be not grieved, because) We have deputed for (believing in) it a people who do not reject it.

Commentary

And he increased in the warning against negligence in the journey and deviation from ill intent by saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning: the high-ranking ones whom we have mentioned and informed that if they were to associate partners, their deeds would be nullified. ﴿Those to whom We have given﴾ meaning: by Our greatness ﴿the Book﴾ meaning: the one that encompasses all good. So whoever possesses what is in it of knowledge and understanding judges the inner selves. This is because people love him and submit to him with their inner selves. ﴿And the judgment﴾ meaning: the precise action based on knowledge, and from it is the enforcement of the word upon the outward appearances by authority, even if the inner selves dislike it. ﴿And the Prophethood﴾ meaning: the knowledge adorned with judgment, which is placing everything in its most rightful position. Thus, it encompasses the two previous ranks. For this reason, the prophets judge the inner selves by what they have (p-182) of knowledge, and the outward appearances by what is manifested from the miracles. Then he caused the greatness of it by affirming that it does not perish. So he said as a consolation regarding the affliction by the slander of those who criticize it and the ignorance of those who turn away from it, and as a reassurance when despair arises from the aversion of most of those being called: ﴿So if they disbelieve in it﴾ meaning: these great matters ﴿These﴾ meaning: the people of Mecca whom you are among, and We have bestowed upon them in the most complete, perfect, highest, and most beautiful manner, and you call them to be happy with what it contains of guidance while they turn away from it. Perhaps the indication here is to belittle them. ﴿So indeed, We have assigned﴾ meaning: due to Our greatness in the past, present, and future ﴿with it a people﴾ meaning: those of strength to carry out the matters by believing in it and preserving its rights. ﴿They are not﴾ and he preceded the preposition out of concern, so he said: ﴿with it disbelievers﴾ meaning: those who conceal the matter from what has appeared of the brightness of its proofs. They are the prophets and those who follow them. And Allah has spoken the truth - and who is more truthful than Allah in speech! Indeed, there have come in this nation from the righteous scholars and the firmly rooted ones, the learned ones whom only Allah can count.
