Commentary
Then he connected with that a proof that they have no knowledge at all to inform about what they were asked regarding his saying, beginning: ﴿Those who have believed﴾ meaning: they have established this action ﴿and have not﴾ meaning: and they have not confirmed their claims that they have not ﴿mixed their faith﴾ meaning: mingled it and tainted it ﴿with injustice﴾.
And when the meaning was: more deserving of safety, he shifted from it to his saying, indicating to them with a tool of distance to highlight the elevation of their rank: ﴿Those are the ones for whom﴾ meaning: specifically ﴿is safety﴾ meaning: due to what has preceded from their description ﴿and they are guided﴾ meaning: and you are misguided, so you are doomed for your proximity to destruction. (And the interpretation of the Prophet ﷺ in what Al-Bukhari and Al-Tirmidhi and Al-Nasa'i narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud - may Allah be pleased with him - regarding this absolute injustice in His saying, ﴿with injustice﴾ by associating partners with Allah) which is an injustice described as great in His saying, ﴿Indeed, associating partners with Allah is a great injustice﴾ [Luqman: 13]. A reminder to the companions - may Allah be pleased with them - that this tanween is for glorification, and since they are the people of the eloquence in which they are refined by that and are assured of it, there is no doubt that the entire context is in repelling from associating partners with Allah, and that it indicates urging to disassociate (p-168) from a little of shirk and a lot of it. Thus, the matter leads to the intended meaning: and they did not mix their faith with anything of shirk, so the tanween at that time is for belittlement just as it is for glorification. It is from the use of something in its reality and its metaphor or in its shared meanings in its wording together - and Allah knows best.
