So when he invalidated all of their doctrines by that, he manifested the direction towards the true God. He showed that the truth had been revealed to him through this perspective. The intended meaning is them, but presenting it in this way is more likely to lead them to accept it. He said, deriving from what the rational evidence in the dominion indicates: "Indeed, I have directed my face," meaning: I have purified my intention without turning towards anything at all. Thus, he expressed complete submission; for whoever submits to something, he approaches it with his face. This indicates his perfection and uniqueness in perfection, as his innovations demonstrate. He expressed it with (the لام) instead of (إلى) so as not to imply a spatial limit. He said: "to the One who created," meaning: for the sake of the servitude of the One who shaped and brought forth "the heavens and the earth." He concluded the evidence with what the surah began with, from his saying: "the One who created the heavens and the earth" [Al-An'am: 1]. The most conclusive evidence for what has preceded is that I interpreted the term 'hanif' as meaning inclination with ease and gentleness, according to what is the nature of the original creation that Allah created people upon. His saying after establishing this evidence: "inclining" means: easy, gentle, soft, inclined with the evidence, not rigid, harsh, or stagnant in imitation, which is the habit of the coarse and dull. He affirmed his disassociation from them with his saying: "And I am not of the polytheists," meaning: of you. However, he manifested the description that necessitates disassociation and generalization, meaning: I do not count among you in any way that I could be close to you with.
