And when he made them aware of the palaces of the small stars, he raised his gaze to something greater than them. Thus, he caused them to turn away from the stars due to their smallness by his saying: "So when he saw the moon rising," meaning: at the beginning of its rising. Al-Azhari said: It is as if it is taken from 'bazgh,' which is the splitting, as if by its light it splits the darkness. He said: "This is my Lord," which is his habit in the first instance.

And when he contemplated that the star is a place of events with its setting, it struck their ears and entered their hearts. He said: "So when it set, he said," emphasizing the utmost certainty: "Surely, if my Lord does not guide me," meaning: the One who has the power to do good to me by bringing me into existence and nurturing me, for He does not change and has no partner in creating guidance in my heart. This indicates that guidance is not to anyone other than Him, nor is it dependent on the establishment of evidence, for it has been established before that, nor on the knowledge of inference, for he is knowledgeable of it. "I will surely be among the people who are astray," meaning: in the worship of others. This was more severe than the first and closer to explicitly denying lordship to the stars and affirming that the Lord is other than them, while being gentle and keeping the argument away from what would necessitate his obstinacy.
