And when he presented this matter in the form of prohibition, he repeated it in the form of command due to its importance and to emphasize it. He also showed them another description, which is the ultimate of the first description, along with what was added to it of guidance to save from calamities. He said: ﴿And leave﴾ meaning: abandon, whatever kind of abandonment it may be, even if it is in the slightest manner. ﴿Those who have taken﴾ meaning: they have burdened themselves by following desires in opposition to sound reason and the pure natural disposition by taking ﴿their religion﴾ in the most foolish manner of their worldly affairs. And since religion is a firmly established trait in the soul, and nothing of the qualities of the soul is more firmly established than it or more certain, and it is the noblest thing a person possesses, and play is against it, there is nothing quicker than its end nor weaker than its construction. He said, reproaching them for having altered the intended purpose of this surah, which is to provide evidence for the oneness of Allah, which there is nothing more noble than it whatsoever, nor higher, nor more precious in any way, nor sweeter—by that which is of lesser value, weaker, more detrimental to manliness, and more disastrous: ﴿A game﴾. And when it might be said that when the play ends, they return to engaging in religion, he followed it with a hint that whenever they grow weary of play, they revive their souls to it with amusement, just as you see a dancer, whenever he tires in his dancing, they revive him with strengthening the amusement or transitioning from one art to another of his arts and a wondrous affair of his affairs. He said: ﴿And amusement﴾ meaning: in mockery of true religion with clapping and noise and with the sacrificial animals and the free animals and other than that. So do not concern yourself with them, and let not your heart be occupied with them. ﴿And the life of this world deceived them﴾ meaning: it deceived them, ﴿which they are among the most aware of its passing away, and that everyone in it is doomed. So their favors are the blessings which He, glorified and exalted is He, has bestowed upon them in that which they cannot attain of happiness except by following His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
And when it might be understood that this leaves them in every situation, he negated it by saying: ﴿And remind with it﴾ meaning: the recitation of the verses, which is the Qur'an, the renewed revelation. (p-149) The pronoun in reality refers to the verses. Meaning: let them do what they want, do not concern yourself with anything of that, and do not cease to admonish them with this Qur'an, meaning: your duty is only to convey. We have not tasked you in this situation with more than that. ﴿That a soul should not be seized﴾. He said in (al-Mujmal): 'Basl' means palm trees, and I have abandoned it: I have surrendered it to destruction. So the meaning is: it is disliked that it be left and surrendered. ﴿A soul for what﴾ meaning: because of what ﴿it has earned﴾ in its worldly life, being ﴿not for it, besides Allah﴾ meaning: the One who is unique in greatness. ﴿A protector﴾ meaning: one who takes charge of its support. ﴿And no intercessor﴾ who can save it with his intercession.
And when the ransom is one of the means of salvation, he said: "And if you give a ransom," meaning: that soul for the purpose of attaining the release, "every ransom," meaning: everything that is thought to be equivalent to it, even if it is the most precious thing. And when the harmful thing is the lack of taking, not being from a specific source, his saying: "It is not taken from it" is based on the fact that it is certain that whoever is in this condition is doomed. He said: "Those," meaning: those who have done these deeds far removed from good, "those who are cast away," meaning: they are delivered over, "by what they have earned." Then he began his saying: "For them is a drink of boiling water," meaning: it is the utmost of heat, by which what is in their bellies is melted due to what they believed in the verses, what appeared on their tongues. "And a painful punishment," meaning: it encompasses always their outward and inward due to what has appeared upon them from that after what was hidden. "By what," meaning: because of what, "they used to disbelieve," meaning: they renewed their covering of the verses.
