And when the translation of what has passed is: Then they equate with their Lord others and they deny you in what you have brought of the truth along with what you have clarified regarding the proofs and established from the signs. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, was very keen on their faith. The situation necessitated that the tongue of the state should say: O Lord, send down upon them what they can transition from contemplation by thought to sight, as they have proposed to me. So he informed him that they will not believe in that, by His saying, in addition to ﴿And no sign comes to them﴾ [Al-An'am: 4] confirming it and depicting it in its course: ﴿And if We had sent down﴾ meaning: according to what We have of greatness ﴿to you a Book﴾ meaning: written from the heavens ﴿on parchment﴾ meaning: paper, in response to what the Jews suggested by their proposal. Then he confirmed that it is a clear matter, not imaginary nor is there any ambiguity in it by saying: ﴿And they touched it﴾ meaning: in addition to the vision. And he increased in confirmation and depiction and negation of the metaphor by saying: ﴿With their hands, they would say﴾ and he made it clear and did not conceal, linking the judgment to the description and indicating that among the existing ones are those who remain silent and believe even after that. So he said: ﴿Those who disbelieved﴾ meaning: a judgment of the permanence of their disbelief, concealing the signs out of obstinacy and denial. And perhaps he dropped from them a reference to the generality of his call, meaning: from the Arabs and from others among the nations of your call, especially the Jews, referred to in their obstinacy and lies by His saying: ﴿The People of the Book ask you to bring down upon them a Book from the heavens﴾ [An-Nisa: 153] ﴿Indeed﴾ meaning: what ﴿this is nothing but magic﴾ meaning: a deception and an illusion that has no reality. And they increased in audacity and said: ﴿Clear﴾ meaning: evident and manifest. The author of the book (Al-Zina) said: The meaning of magic in the speech of the Arabs is the reasoning with something and the defense with it and the punishment with something that has no actual basis. It is said: He enchanted him - if he reasoned with him and punished him and confused him until he does not know from where to turn and he flips from his face. So it is as if the magicians reason with people with falsehood and they depict falsehood in the form of truth and turn it away from its direction.
