Commentary
And when He commanded him with what to say in response to their denial, he advanced towards him in what he does at the time of their engaging in denial. He said: "And when you see..." He addressed the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, while the intended meaning is different, so that it may be a deterrent for "those who engage"; meaning: they speak "in Our verses"; meaning: without reflection or insight, but rather by following desires, just as one who wades in water does so without insight to cover the places of his steps and without complete choice due to the predominance of the water. "So turn away from them" by leaving the sitting with them or what takes its place; and when engaging in the verses indicates a lack of intellect, he said: "Until they engage in a discussion other than it"; thus he judged their discussion in what is besides that also as engaging; because it contains both worthless and valuable things; because it is not constrained by the system of the Shari'ah.
And when Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has lifted the ruling of forgetfulness from this nation, He said, affirming: "And if the devil causes you to forget"; meaning: a great forgetting, indicating that such a matter is worthy of not being forgotten. "Then do not sit after the reminder"; meaning: the remembering of this prohibition "with the wrongdoing people"; this revealed the place of the implicit, generally indicating the description that is the cause of engaging, which is being in darkness.
