And when he became aware of their actions and affairs until His Oneness became clear and His uniqueness was established, he reminded them of their states in affirming His Oneness at the time of hardships and their returning from that when they were saved from it. They were like someone who asked a person for something and confirmed to him the covenant of gratitude. So when he did good to him by giving him his request, he broke his promise and persisted in disbelief. This, in their view, is extremely vile and cannot be described. He said: ﴿Say﴾ meaning: to those who claim the merits of good deeds ﴿Who saves you﴾ meaning: greatly and significantly ﴿from the darkness of land and sea﴾ meaning: where there is no guidance for you by a star or a mountain or anything else. Or he expressed the darkness as a metaphor for the troubles that have reached such severity that their possessor feels as if he is in the utmost darkness. He is in a situation where he cannot find a way out through any means or method. ﴿You call upon Him﴾ meaning: sincerely to Him and in Oneness, turning away from all polytheism and partners, for the removal of fortunes when the terror surrounds and dominates the hearts. So nothing remains except the sound nature. Imam Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili said in his book: (The Aware): ﴿In supplication﴾ meaning: manifesting humility, which is the intensity of poverty, and its reality is submission. And His saying: ﴿In secret﴾ meaning: you conceal in yourselves what you manifest; Shimir said: it is said: he humbled himself to him and he is clearly humble. These are a people who are humbled, meaning: they are submissive, and they are supplicants, meaning: they are in supplication. Supplication to Allah is to be humble before Him and to submit. And if a man is physically weak, you would say: he is truly weak in body and clearly humble in submission. It ends here.

And when he clarified their description at the time of supplication, he clarified their words at that time and said: ﴿If He saves us from this﴾ so they confirmed and specified and clarified to the utmost extent ﴿We will certainly be among the grateful﴾ meaning: those deeply rooted in gratitude.
