Commentary

And when He informed of the completeness of knowledge and power, He informed of the predominance of His sovereignty and His great might. He stated that His actions are by way of compulsion and cannot be opposed. So if someone were to strive to sleep at a time other than its due time, he would not be able to, or if he were to stand at the time of sleep, he would be unable, or to revive at the time of death, he could not... and so on. He said: "And He does that while He alone has knowledge of the unseen of the unseen and the veils of greatness, the All-Prevailing." He illustrated this by saying: "Above His servants," meaning: in encompassing knowledge and action. As for His overpowering of non-existence, it is by creation and bringing into being. And as for His overpowering of existence, it is by annihilation and corruption, by transferring the possible from non-existence to existence at one time and from existence to non-existence at another time. He overpowers light with darkness and darkness with light, day with night and night with day—among other types of beings and shifts of the possible. "And He sends" and returned to the address, for it is clearer. He said: "Upon you" from His angels, "guardians," meaning: they preserve every movement and stillness of yours so that you may feel shy before them and fear the consequence of their recording. And they will stand as witnesses against your actions, otherwise He—glorified and exalted is He—is independent of them; for He is the All-Knowing, the Capable, and they preserve you according to His will concerning you. "Until when death comes to one of you," and since the precedence of the object is more fearful, He said: "One of you, death," meaning: that which there is no escape from and no way to avoid. "Our messengers" from the Angel of Death and his assistants take his soul completely. "And they do not fail" in a single breath or anything less than it or anything greater than it, without delay in taking it before its time or delaying it.
