Commentary
And likewise, we have tested them by sending you. We have tested, meaning we have acted as the tester does, forcibly by what we have of greatness. Some of them by some, by specifying with faith, wealth, poverty, and similar matters. So they may say, meaning in denial that the favor of others upon them is a contempt for them and belittling. Are these, meaning those who do not equal us, rather they do not even come close to us in any characteristic of worldly traits? Whom Allah has favored, meaning with His majesty and greatness, upon them, meaning He has guided them to attain the truth and what brings them happiness with Him, while they are, in our view, in a state of insignificance. Among us, the verse is referring to what will come in this surah from His saying, the Exalted: 'Until we are given like what the messengers of Allah were given.' (Al-An'am: 124) And when denial is only valid with the end of knowledge of the ranks of the favored, and that the favored does not deserve preference from the aspect by which he is favored, He denied their denial by saying: 'Is not Allah,' meaning the One to Whom belongs all matters, thus there is no objection against Him, 'the All-Knowing of the grateful,' meaning those who deserve to be preferred for their gratitude over others for their disbelief.
