Commentary

And when their turning away from contemplation was a cause for their denial, and it is a cause for their punishment, He said: ﴿So they have denied﴾ meaning: they have committed denial of the truthful ﴿with the truth﴾ meaning: because of the established matter that is complete in all its stability. For all the signs are equal in their indication of what one of them indicates ﴿when it came to them﴾ meaning: they did not delay at all upon the coming, neither for contemplation nor for anything else, and that is the clearest evidence of obstinacy.

And when turning away from something is thus the act of the denier who mocks, who has reached the utmost limit in his denial, which is mockery, He said: ﴿So surely it will come to them﴾ meaning: with a truthful promise that there is no failure in it when the punishment descends upon them, even if its coming is delayed ﴿news of what they were﴾ meaning: by nature and disposition ﴿mocking﴾ meaning: they renew the mockery of it with the utmost desire to seek it, and it is the farthest thing from mockery. And the news is the great report, which comes with recompense. The precedence of the circumstance indicates that they were not mocking except with the complete truth - as you see many of the affluent do not marvel at the marvel and marvel at the non-marvel, or that he considered their mockery of others in relation to their mockery of it as non-existent.
