Commentary
And when he has preceded the warning by mentioning the absolute punishment in absolute circumstances, and the mention of 'the' indicates with the addition of emphasis that there is a type of respite. He followed it by stating that the seizing of nations was sudden - he then followed the warning with a specific punishment, the imagining of its horror makes the limbs tremble and the hearts constrict, and fills the souls with dread. For there is no more horrific state than that of a deaf, blind, mad person. He said, indicating - by dropping the 'kaf' of address while expressing the seizing which is known to be for suddenness by overpowering and coercion - to the utmost warning against the swiftness of any seizing: 'Say, have you considered...' So the reality of the one associated with the 'kaf' is: 'Have you considered yourselves?' And this is 'Have you considered' in absolute vision, for what has preceded is an indication towards the request for hastening the response out of fear of the surprise of punishment. And although the intended meaning in both places is: 'Inform me' - 'If Allah takes' - meaning: the One capable of all things, the One knowledgeable of all things - 'your hearing' and he specified it due to the lack of difference in it; for it is the greatest way for the heart to perceive, which has no greater difference in it even for a single person in relation to different states, so that this would be a clearer indication of acting by choice. 'And your sight' means: He has made you deaf and blind, both outwardly and inwardly, by depriving you of benefit. 'And He has sealed upon your hearts' so that they do not comprehend at all, or do not benefit from comprehension. 'Who is a god?' meaning: a deity in truth; for He has encompassed knowledge and power. Then he described this news by saying: 'Other than Allah' meaning: the One who possesses all greatness. 'Will come to you with it' meaning: with that which is the noblest of meanings of your noblest faculties, or with something of it.
And when these verses reached - in conveying the message regarding His oneness and the invalidity of every deity besides Him - the highest ranks... He pointed out that He is upon that, by commanding reflection upon them and their state thereafter, indicating what has preceded from the fact that the suggestions do not benefit anyone who desires - glorified is He - their misery. He said: 'Look how We diversify' [meaning]: by what We have of greatness 'the verses' meaning: We reveal them to them and to others in every aspect of expression, reaching from the excellence that captivates minds and astonishes hearts, and is sufficient in conveying to the desired; and when the turning away from such is extremely far, He expressed it with a tool of delay, saying: 'Then they' meaning: after this statement with the sincerity of their innermost selves 'turn away' meaning: they turn away with a turning away that is necessary for them, necessary to the quality.
