Commentary

And when it was customary for the majority of the people of this world that the last of the armies and their stragglers are missed due to the weariness of their companions from the pursuit and their annoyance from the hardship and toil, and their inability to encompass all of the desires - Allah, the Exalted, informed that His taking is not like that, and that His granting to the last is like His granting to the first equally. So He said, causing to be mentioned regarding the described taking, indicating by the construction for the action to the completeness of ability, and by the end to the total destruction: ﴿So the end of the people who wronged was cut off﴾, meaning: the last of ﴿the people who wronged﴾, meaning: by placing the thing in a place other than its rightful place, like the one walking in the darkness. They were placed for the harshness of the place of tenderness that is called for by severity, and they placed joy in the blessing in the place of fear from the return to severity, just as you wronged by calling upon the idols at the time of ease, and that was the place of calling upon the One who bestowed those blessings. And you called upon Allah at the time of hardship, and that was the place of calling upon the One whom you worshipped at the time of ease, so that you do not fall into what your habit has led you to blame for it.

And when there is something disliked, it is called for, and when the situation is judged, Junadab is called.

And when their total destruction is among the greatest blessings upon those who opposed them from among the messengers - peace be upon them - and their followers - may Allah be pleased with them - He alerted to that in general along with what indicates (p-117) the appearance of absolute self-sufficiency. So He said: ﴿And all praise﴾, meaning: their matter was completely cut off, while the state is that the encompassing of the attributes of perfection ﴿belongs to Allah﴾, the One who is unique in the attributes of majesty and beauty ﴿Lord of the worlds﴾, the Creator of them all. That is all for Him after the annihilation of creation, regardless of what state they were in, whether belief or disbelief, just as it was for Him before their existence and at their creation in all of their states - as indicated at the beginning of the surah. So it is as if it was said: perfection belongs to Allah who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light, then those who disbelieved in their Lord equate. So their end was cut off, and perfection belongs to Him and has not changed; because the existence of any existent does not increase it, nor does the absence of any absent decrease it. So He is praised in the state of non-existence and destruction just as He was praised in the state of existence and creation. So do not let your soul be distressed over them, for nothing escapes from their belief or disbelief from His will - glorified and exalted is He - so it is not upon you whether they proposed the signs or not, for upon you is only the conveying.
