We transferred them from hardship to ease, and that was a gradual entrapment for them. We extended their time and prolonged their days until when they rejoiced in what they had been given, meaning: they were engrossed in the ease that came to them after they had been tested with that. It was known that they were in a state of great foolishness, not turning back from the discipline of the whips of trials, nor benefiting from the carpet of blessings and ease. Rather, they thought that trials were the norm of time, and ease was due to their deserving of grace. It was known that their hearts could not be expected to awaken by heat or cold, nor by moist or dry. We seized them with Our greatness, and We only seized them in a state of ease to make their regret more intense. Suddenly, We did not allow them to supplicate when the matter unfolded, nor did We give them any respite at all. Rather, burdens of punishment descended upon them, and they were overwhelmed by the burdens of hardships and calamities that astonished them and occupied them from everything until they were dumbfounded. So when they were in despair, it was caused by that suddenness that they were struck with silence about what was within themselves, and despair turned into regret and confusion. They continued after they had fallen silent until they became still and quiet. In the negation of supplication from those who preceded them, after it was affirmed for the polytheists of this nation, there is an appeal for mercy. In mentioning the gradual entrapment of those with blessings at the time of forgetting what they had been reminded of, to what seized them suddenly from the decisive punishments - this is the utmost warning.
