Commentary
And when what the situation required of them did not occur, denial arose against them. He said, expressing with a tool of specification to indicate with the negation that they had no excuse for leaving supplication: "So why did they not, when Our punishment came to them, humble themselves?" And since the meaning of denial is that they did not humble themselves, he said: "But their hearts became hard," meaning: they did not remember their Lord at all. "And the devil made their deeds seem fair to them," meaning: by what he entered upon them through the avenue of desires, "what they were doing" of the great sins and abominations that were caused by their downfall to the lowest of the low.
