Commentary
And when the decree was made after the reminder with this verse in which the verses varied and were repeated and the indications multiplied; those who believed are alive, hearing our words, speaking our praises, and witnessing our actions - He then added to it His saying: ﴿And those who denied﴾ meaning: they committed denial ﴿of Our verses﴾ meaning: regarding what has of greatness necessitating its addition to us, whether it was seen or heard, a repeated denial based on the number of the verses either by action or by force, even if by turning away from them ﴿Deaf﴾ meaning: dead, they do not hear ﴿and dumb﴾ they do not speak ﴿in the darkness﴾ meaning: blind, they do not see. Therefore, they continue to be stumbling about like the blind, striving with utmost effort towards destruction; because that is the state of one in darkness, so how about one who is in all darkness! And perhaps he gathered them as a reference to the fact that the denier does not benefit from sight or insight, and that is because they did not benefit from their lives nor from their hearing nor their speaking nor their sight nor their minds; all of that from them is as if it does not exist.
And when it was clarified that the deaf, dumb, and blind cannot be guided, it was clarified that this is only in relation to others - glorified and exalted is He - as a rejection of their request for a response to what they propose from the verses. As for Him, glorified and exalted is He, He is the doer of what He wills. So He said in response to one who might say: Their guidance is only possible: ﴿Whoever Allah wills﴾ - meaning: the One to whom belongs all command and there is no command for anyone with Him - to misguide him ﴿He misguides him, and whoever wills﴾ His guidance ﴿He makes him﴾ and He indicated to His enabling him with the tool of elevation, so He said: ﴿on a straight path﴾ by creating guidance in his heart - and whoever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him, and whoever Allah misguides, there is none to guide him, even though all are His servants and creation, fluctuating in His blessings, going and coming in His goodness and generosity - indeed, in that are clear signs of His oneness and the completeness of His power for a people who understand.
