And when this was produced, what had been previously informed about their loss for themselves on the Day of Resurrection was expected by the listener to be mentioned. So he said, to affirm that, and he increased the burden, for indeed it is from the taste of the punishment: ﴿Indeed, they have lost﴾. And he made evident the place of the implicit, in generalization and a warning about what necessitated that for them, so he said: ﴿Those who denied the meeting with Allah﴾, meaning: the Most High King, to whom belongs all command, and there is no command for anyone with Him. [Indeed, they] have lost everything that can be attained of the great reward, and their denial continued ﴿Until when the Hour came to them﴾, meaning: the truth, as well as death, which is its beginning. For indeed, [whoever] dies, his hour has come. And he warned them of it by saying: ﴿Suddenly﴾, meaning: unexpectedly, or at a sudden time, or it surprised them by its coming at a time of heedlessness, where they cannot feel at the very moment it comes, a type of awareness. ﴿They said: O our regret﴾, meaning: come, let us be present, O regret that is fitting for us in this situation! For indeed, there is no companion for us besides you, and it is a metaphor for the greatness of the regret and a warning about it, so that a person may refrain from its causes. ﴿For what we neglected﴾, meaning: we fell short ﴿in it﴾, meaning: because of the Hour, so we missed what would bring happiness in it from the refinement of morals that prepare for the race by leaving the following of the messengers. And that is because Allah created the accountable being and sent down to him the speaking soul as a dwelling for it in the lower world. And He bestowed upon him apparent blessings, which are the external senses that perceive, and the organs and bodily instruments, and internal blessings, which are the mind, thought, and others, so that he may utilize these powers and instruments to attain true knowledge and virtuous morals, whose benefits increase after death. And He sent the prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - for guidance and showed them miracles to affirm their truthfulness. Yet they turned away from what they were called to, from the purification of the soul, and they turned to the use of instruments and powers in fleeting pleasures and desires. Thus, they missed the bodily instruments, which are the capital, and what they thought were the pleasures that they counted as profits was lost, so they lost the provisions, and they did not prepare the souls for guidance. So there is neither capital nor profit, and they became in the utmost state of severance and alienation, and there is no greater loss than this.
And when this was a terrifying matter, he increased its terror by informing in a present participle about the severity of their exhaustion in that situation and the weakness of their bodies due to their sins, until it was as if heavy burdens were upon them. He said: ﴿And they﴾ meaning: And they said that while they ﴿carry their burdens﴾ meaning: the burdens of their sins which are such that they would weigh them down. He confirmed the matter and depicted it by saying: ﴿upon their backs﴾ to indicate the burden upon them, as it is said: The words of so-and-so weighed heavily upon you. It is permissible that their deeds are embodied as heavy bodies, so they would be tasked with carrying them. And since that burden is a matter that description does not reach which our minds can bear of the ugliness and weight of it, he alluded to that by saying, gathering all the blame: ﴿Indeed, evil is what they bear.﴾
