And they are in a state of the doer of "listening" [Al-An'am: 25], meaning: they listen to you while they are "forbidding" it, meaning: from listening or from following the Qur'an. And they "keep away" meaning: they distance themselves "from it," just as it happened to Abu Jahl and his companions in their agreement to refrain from listening and what follows it. And if they "destroy" meaning: by their worship and their striving, "except themselves," meaning: they do not harm you nor harm anyone among your followers in what undermines the purpose of your sending, which is to manifest the religion, eradicate polytheism, and humiliate the corrupt. And they "do not perceive," meaning: they have no kind of awareness of what their state leads them to; rather, they are like animals, and indeed, they are in a better state than them.
