And when their informing of what is not occurring on that day is unlikely after the lifting of the veil from the horrors and the manifestation of the earthquakes and the tremors - he indicated to him with a tool of distance, so he said: ﴿Then their trial was not﴾ meaning: the consequence of our mixing with them through this question and similar calamities which are such that it may incline what it has mixed with and turn it [and] if it were that it was created - about its state by what it has received from its calamities and earthquakes except for their lying in that gathering, and this is the meaning of his saying: ﴿Except that they said﴾ firmness from them in what they are deeply rooted in from the description of lying: ﴿By Allah﴾ so they mentioned the greatest name by which the high mountains tremble for its greatness, and the stones that are deaf speak by His command, the one that encompasses all the meanings of the beautiful names which much of it appeared to them on that day, and they confirmed that by mentioning the description that reminds them of His nurturing and the continuity of His kindness towards them, so they said: ﴿Our Lord﴾ so they were not satisfied with mere lying until they swore, nor with mere swearing until they mentioned the encompassing name and the improving description ﴿We were not polytheists﴾ meaning: their denying you has led them to a limit where they lie in that day after the uncovering of the veil, hoping for what does not benefit them, as you see the bewildered one in the world doing like that, for it is despair from the success of all: the polytheists and the people of the Book, or the meaning may be a reprimand for them and a lamentation: that the consequence of their disbelief in which they were tempted by adhering to it and boasting about it and fighting for it - due to it being the religion of the fathers - was nothing but denial of it and disavowal from it and swearing to deny being religious by it, and the meaning according to the readings of the accusative and nominative in (trial) by making it a single news or name, so the meaning of the accusative reading is: there was nothing except their saying - meaning: other than their lying - their trial, meaning: there was nothing their trial except this saying, so this saying alone is their trial, thus he negated from their trial and stripped it of everything other than this saying, so the trial is confined to their lying, and the lying may be established for others, meaning: that they lie without trial, but in a state of ease, and this is precisely the meaning of the reading of Ibn Kathir, Ibn Amir, and Hafs with the raising of trial, meaning: their trial was nothing other than their lying, for their trial has been negated from everything other than lying, so it is confined to it, and it may be established in a state other than it - as has passed, and this estimation is precious, rare in existence, and precise in approach - it will come - if Allah, the Exalted, wills - at ﴿And their prayer at the House was not﴾ [Al-Anfal: 35] in Al-Anfal what benefits here, so refer to it.
