Commentary
And when the meaning of this is that they are the most deceitful of people, it is indicated by their lying on the Day of Gathering after the veil is lifted. He said: "And on the Day," meaning: remember their lies against Allah and their denial in this world. And remember something more astonishing than that, which is their lying in the realm of testimony when the veil is lifted and the barriers are removed on the Day "We will gather them," meaning: We will assemble them by that which We have of greatness while they are unwilling and humbled. "All together," meaning: the people of the Book, the polytheists, and others along with their deities. He pointed to the greatness of that Day, its length, its hardship, and its terror by His saying with a tool of delay: "Then We will say," meaning: by that which We have of greatness, the veils have been lifted for them, and its depths and seas have become apparent to them, as a rebuke and reprimand. "To those who associated partners," meaning: they named something besides Us as a god and worshipped it in action, whether it be idols, 'Uzayr, the Messiah, darkness, light, or something else, or by being pleased with polytheism. For being pleased with something is an action for it, especially if it is accompanied by denying the truth and testifying for the falsehood that their religion is better. "Where are your partners?" He attributed them to their own selves for their naming them as such. "Those whom you used to claim," meaning: that they are our partners in worship or testimony that leads to it. Call them today so they may lessen for you from what We intend of harm to you, or raise you from what We intend of your situation. And this questioning may occur with the absence of the partners from them or when they are brought forth to them. Thus, the inquiry is about what they used to assume of their benefit, as if their absence is their absence.
