Commentary
And when He had already presented from the generality of His mercy what made the wicked hopeful, then He made him despair of that by what was indicated regarding the loss - He stated here what that previous necessitated, saying, describing that punishment and clarifying that mercy on that day is unlike what is currently known. For it is specific, not general, and it continuously bestows upon whom it reaches, not removed, and likewise the blessing. Such is the nature of that day. "Whoever is turned away from it" means: that punishment. And when the intended meaning is the permanence of being turned away throughout the entire day, He said: "On that day" meaning: the day when the punishment of that day will be with it. "Then he has been shown mercy" means: he has been treated with favor as the one who is shown mercy. "And that" means: not other than it. "Is the success" meaning: the attainment of what is sought. "Clear" means: very evident. And whoever is not turned away from it has been humiliated, and that is the great punishment.
