Commentary
Then he clarified the intended meaning of its revelation. It is the establishment of the conclusive proof. He said: "That is to say: so that you do not say" or out of dislike for you to say, O illiterate nation: "The Book was only revealed" meaning: the divine, renowned one "to two groups." And he brought the time closer and divided it by including the neighbor, saying: "From before us" meaning: the Jews and the Christians. "And if" meaning: and we - or: and the matter - "were unaware of their study" meaning: their reading of their Book, a repeated reading. And since it is the softened form, he brought the distinguishing 'lam' between it and the negating one, saying: "For the heedless" meaning: we do not know its reality, nor has its truth been established with us [nor is it in our tongue].
