Commentary
And when he established these laws, he alerted to their importance, particularly in a way that encompasses all that has been mentioned in the surah and even in others. He said, adding to what you understand - adding to the prohibitions and opposites of the commands in a way that includes all of the Shariah -: "And do not deviate from My path:" ﴿And that﴾ meaning: "And because" - according to the reading of the majority with a fathah, meaning: follow it for that reason. And according to the reading of Ibn 'Amir and Ya'qub with a kasrah, it is a beginning (p-321) ﴿This﴾ meaning: that which I have legislated for you ﴿is My path﴾ while it is ﴿straight, so follow it﴾ meaning: with all your effort; because it is the one that gathers the servants upon the truth in which there is all good.
And when the command to follow it includes the prohibition of other than it, he stated it explicitly to emphasize his command, saying: ﴿And do not follow the paths﴾ meaning: the diverging ones from the desires that separate between the servants; and for this reason, he said, explaining: ﴿for they will lead you astray﴾ meaning: those false paths ﴿from His path﴾. And when he praised him, commanding to follow him and prohibiting other than him, clarifying the reason for that - he emphasized his praise, saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great matter of following him ﴿He has enjoined upon you﴾.
And when he had warned against straying from it, and it was known that whoever deviates from the straight path falls into destruction, and that everyone who imagines that he is falling into destruction fears - he said: ﴿So that perhaps you may be conscious of Allah﴾ meaning: follow him and leave other than him so that your state is like that of one who is hoped for to fear that he may slip and go astray and perish. And this is as he praised him - glorified and exalted is He - previously in His saying: ﴿And this is the path of your Lord, straight﴾ [Al-An'am: 126] ﴿We have detailed the signs for a people who reflect﴾ [Al-An'am: 126]. And he detailed here from the rulings in three verses, and concluded each verse with the advice so that this would be more emphatic in the saying and more likely to be accepted. And he concluded each one of them with what he concluded, for when the intellect calls for reflection, it leads to piety.
