And when the truth was confirmed, and the army of falsehood was shattered and crushed by its falsehood, all their doubts were dispelled. The proofs spoke, and the debater was silenced. It became clear that they had no witness for the truth because they had no truth. It was as if it were said: Tell them: Here I am, a witness for what I have said, from one whose testimony cannot be rejected, and I have been attested to by one whose attestation is only accepted through this Book, which your inability to bring forth anything like it is a witness that it is His saying. So, do you have any witness that is accepted? And when they had no witness other than their own fabrications, the falsehood of the false one appears upon investigation as a continuous tradition from Allah. It becomes evident to the witnesses that they are not upon anything. He commanded - glorified and exalted is He - that they be called upon in their supplication so that their disgrace may be revealed and their shame may become known. He said: "Say: Come forth," meaning: Bring forth. It is a word of invitation in which the masculine and feminine, the singular and plural are equal among the people of Hijaz. "Your witnesses."
And when it was as if it were said: Which witnesses? He said: "Those who bear witness," meaning: They establish the testimony that "Allah" - meaning: the One whose judgment is not for anyone else - "has forbidden this," meaning: that which you mentioned before. The addition of the witnesses to them and their description with "those" is evidence that they are known and marked by supporting their false doctrine. If he had said: "Witnesses" - without addition - it would have been understood that the one sought is the one who bears witness to the truth, and it is not so; because the rational proof has been established that they have no argument and that the argument is for Allah against what they claimed. Thus, it is certainly invalid that anyone bears witness to that with truth.
And when it was as if it were said: For indeed, if they are brought forth, they will not be able - if they have any intellect or if they have any shame - to speak when they hear this truth. It is based on this that His saying: "But if they dare to witness," meaning: falsely and with lies, that which we have invalidated with decisive proofs, "then do not bear witness with them," meaning: Leave them and do not submit to them, for they are upon misguidance and their testimony is based only on desires. "And do not follow desires." And the place of the implicit statement has shown a generalization and a conditional ruling by description, indicating that the leading to denial and all falsehood is only desires. And whoever opposes the apparent verses is indeed a person of desires. He said: "Those who denied," meaning: they established denial "against Our signs," meaning: regarding what they have of clarity and what they have of greatness by being attributed to us.
And when He described them with denial, He followed that description with the lack of faith. He indicated by the conjunction 'and' the connection in each of the two descriptions, saying: 'And those who do not believe in the Hereafter,' meaning: which is the abode of recompense. For if they had acknowledged it, they would not have dared to commit sins. 'And they are with their Lord,' meaning: those upon whom there is no blessing and no good with them except that it is solely from Him. 'They make equals,' meaning: they make others equal to Him. And they will know when they say to their partners while they are in Hell, arguing: 'By Allah, we were certainly in clear error,' [Ash-Shu'ara: 97] 'When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds,' [Ash-Shu'ara: 98].
