Commentary
And when he mentioned their foolishness, which contains pure boldness and pure hesitation, he followed it with what is mixed of both. He said: ﴿And they said﴾ meaning: the polytheists or some of them, and the others agreed. ﴿What is in the bellies of these﴾ [indicating what they have cut off for their idols, and they clarified it by saying]: ﴿the cattle﴾ meaning: from the fetuses ﴿pure﴾ meaning: purely without any mixture in it. He feminized it for the meaning of the fetuses, or the 'taa' could be for emphasis, or it could be a source like 'al-'aafiyah', meaning: having purity. ﴿For our males﴾ and when the intended meaning was the lineage in every attribute, he came with the conjunction and said: ﴿And forbidden﴾ and omitted the 'haa' either for adherence to the wording or to confirm that the intended meaning of (pure) is the emphasis. ﴿For our females﴾ meaning: our females, and it is as if he expressed with the term 'spouses' to clarify the place of foolishness by their being counterparts to men. This is if it is born alive. ﴿And if it be﴾ meaning: what is in their bellies ﴿dead﴾ and it is as if he affirmed the 'haa' of femininity for emphasis. And Abu Ja'far, Ibn 'Amir, and Abu Bakr narrated from 'Asim, carrying it on the meaning of: (what), and Ibn Kathir and Abu Ja'far and Ibn 'Amir raised the subject to completion, and Ibn Kathir mentioned that the femininity is not real. The others made it accusative by making it deficient with the masculine, carrying it on the wording of: (what). ﴿So they﴾ meaning: their males and females ﴿in it﴾ meaning: that which is in the bellies ﴿are partners﴾ meaning: equally so.
And when all of that was a description from them of things in places other than those which Allah loves, he said: ﴿He will reward them for their description﴾ meaning: by placing painful punishment in every place they dislike his description in, until it becomes like their description which they have continued to follow their desires in until it became a fixed character for them, so he shows them the evil of its effects. Then he justified that by saying: ﴿Indeed, He is Wise﴾ meaning: He does not reward for a thing except with its like and places it in the most rightful and just of places. ﴿Knowing﴾ meaning: with the equivalence and who deserves it and in what manner it is done, and in what way it is most complete and perfect. And in that is the most complete indication that these things are in the utmost distance from wisdom, for He is exalted above legislating them, and it is pure foolishness that only a tyrant or ignorant person would do.
