Tafsir for verse: 6:137
137Similarly, their associate-gods have made the killing of their children seem fair to many mushriks (idolators), so that they may ruin them and may confuse their faith for them. Had Allah so willed, they would not have done that. So, leave them alone with what they fabricate.

Commentary

And when this implies that they have diminished their wealth by themselves without any benefit, and they have given it to those who do not deserve it, Allah, the Most High, alerted that this is the beautification of those who misled them from the devils, from the priests of the idols and others among humans and jinn who speak from the insides of the idols and others. He said, alerting that they beautified for them what is clearer than that: "And likewise" meaning: and similar to what has been beautified for all the polytheists, the wasting of their wealth and the disbelief in their Lord, their partners "beautified for many of the polytheists."

And when the beautifier of their baseness is one who is not worthy of having his beautification accepted or being paid attention to, then obeying his words is strange. The act of carrying out the beautified command is even stranger. He presented it as a warning about that and said: "Killing their children" meaning: by burying them alive out of fear of poverty and slaughtering for their idols. There is a great difference between one who creates for them the child and provides for him and creates him, and between one who is only a cause for his annihilation. And when this is of utmost strangeness, the soul longs for the doer of the beautification, so he said: "Their partners" meaning: they are fewer than them in what they are addressed with from the insides of the idols and what the priests and the desires beautify for them because of the idols.

And when this matter is astonishing, the matter in the reading of Ibn 'Amir, who was born in the time of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who is included in the blessings of that era, taking from a group of the Companions, described as abundant in knowledge, strong in religion, and powerful in memorization and preservation, and the evidence of transmission in ascribing the action to the partners by adding the source to its doer, is astonishing. And the addition and the added are separated by the object - which is the children - because the occurrence of the killing in them, as previously mentioned, is more astonishing.

And when this might have been for a benefit, this great act was belittled, he mentioned that it has no benefit except for destruction in this world and the religion which is destruction in the Hereafter, so that this would be more astonishing. He said: "To lead them astray" meaning: to destroy them with a destruction that has no benefit in any way. "And to mix" meaning: to confuse and resemble "upon them their religion" meaning: it is the religion of Ibrahim, which Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Isma'il - peace be upon them - and he did not proceed with the slaughter except by the command of Allah, then indeed he ransomed him and did not carry out the slaughter. So these people contradicted the two commands of the partners together, thus they combined for them between two destructions: in the soul and the religion. For indeed, killing in the soul is extremely great, and its occurrence as a form of religion without any basis or doubt is greater. So there is no more misguided than one who follows one who was a cause for the destruction of his soul and his religion.

And when the Arabs claimed to have sharp minds, clear thoughts, correct opinions, and abundant, penetrating intellects, He mentioned that to them as a means of reasoning; mocking them, meaning: that they did this for this reason, yet they were not aware of it and did not realize what they intended by you, while they are stones, so you are lower than them. And when He affirmed for the partners an action which is beautification, and He had previously denied independence from it for them and for all the enemies of the prophets, He assigned the matter there - because the context is for the enemies - to the attribute of lordship which necessitates protection and care. And the speech here is specifically about the partners - He linked the matter to the name of the essence that indicates perfection, necessitating greatness, might, pride, and all the beautiful names in the context of encompassing and majesty. He said: 'And if Allah had willed,' meaning: with His greatness and encompassing all the attributes of perfection that necessitate being exalted above rivals and being free from partners and children, that the polytheists would not do what they did, meaning: that which was beautified for them. Rather, that is only by His will and decree, guarding against the assumption that they have the ability to do anything independently, and as a consolation for the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and as a relief. And He confirmed the consolation by saying: 'So leave them and what they fabricate,' meaning: what they utter of lies and deliberately commit.
