Commentary

And when He clarified - glorified and exalted is He - that for one of the two groups is the Abode of Peace, and for the other is the Abode of Blame, He said, gathering both groups and adding to His saying, "For them is the Abode of Peace with their Lord" [Al-An'am: 127]. "And for each" means: [for every worker from] the two groups, whether righteous or wicked [among the tribes of jinn and humans] in the two abodes, "are degrees" meaning: Allah will elevate them by it, "for what" means: for what they "have done". And there are lows that He will lower them into likewise.

And when it was established that He, the Most High, does not destroy the criminals except after warning them, and that includes giving them respite, and He concluded their states by stating that they are a place for the establishment of heedlessness and its permanence - He negated that anything would be safe from that by virtue of His greatness, in a way that affirms for Him the encompassing knowledge of all their deeds. He said: "And what is your Lord" means: the Benefactor to you by elevating your allies and lowering your enemies. And He emphasized the negation to affirm the increase of knowledge, so He said: "unaware of what they do" means: of anything that anyone from the two groups does. Rather, He is knowledgeable of everything about that and of what the worker deserves, capable of rewarding him. So do not fall into the illusion that the respite is due to the obscurity of the deserving because of the obscurity of what necessitates it. [Thus, the verse is among the texts regarding the writings of the righteous from the jinn].
