Commentary
And when it became clear by this that He appointed the disbelievers from the wrongdoers of the jinn and the wrongdoers of mankind and He empowered them over them - He informed - exalted is He - that this is His action with every wrongdoer, regardless of which kind he was, whether he was a disbeliever or not. So He said: ﴿And thus﴾ meaning: and like that appointment by which We empowered the jinn over mankind, which increased the punishment of the two groups. ﴿We will appoint﴾ meaning: We will follow in all times from all of creation ﴿some of the wrongdoers﴾ meaning: those deeply immersed in wrongdoing ﴿over others﴾ meaning: by gathering between the forms, in the inner attributes and characteristics, and We will empower some of them over others in misguidance and leading astray, and in pains and shackles ﴿because of what they used to﴾ by their natures ﴿earn﴾ meaning: because of their gathering in the temperaments that We have shaped them with, they gather and some of them submit to others, according to what We have caused of the appropriate causes for that wrongdoing which We have facilitated for them, until all their actions became in places other than their rightful ones, so some of them wrong each other and some of them destroy each other, and they do not increase except in gathering until all deserve what We have written for them of punishment. Al-Tabarani narrated in Al-Awsat from Jabir - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah - Mighty and Majestic - says: I will take revenge on those whom I hate by those whom I hate, then I will bring them all to the Fire." And from Malik ibn Dinar who said: I saw in some of the Books of Allah that have been revealed that Allah, exalted is He, says: I will destroy My enemies by My enemies, then I will destroy them by My allies. Or it could be said: It has been informed to us that Allah - Mighty and Majestic - appointed the believers because of the goodness of their deeds, and like what He appointed them to honor them, He will appoint some of the wrongdoers over each other to humiliate them because of what they used to engage in of the evils of deeds and bad characteristics and worthless traits, which will lead them to the destruction of pains and calamities. Or it could be said: It has become clear that each of the wrongdoers of mankind and the jinn was an ally to each other, and just as We made some of them allies to each other in this world, We will do so when We gather them in the Fire, making some of them allies - meaning: followers of each other, so that some may enjoy each other and support each other if they are able, but far from them is that, far from them! They are occupied with weeping, wailing, regret, and lamentation.
