Commentary

And when remembrance at the signs is only for those who are favored in the ways of guidance, he said, encouraging remembrance, for it is the cause of divine grace upon the hearts prepared for it: ﴿For them﴾ meaning: those who remember, ﴿is the abode of peace﴾ meaning: Paradise. He, glorified and exalted is He, attributed it to Himself; as an increase in encouragement for it. He specified this noble name because nothing of it is afflicted by harm, fear, or toil. Then he increased the encouragement for it by saying: ﴿with their Lord﴾ meaning: [in] the guarantee of the One who does good to them and His presence by which He has prepared for them and made easy for them. ﴿And He﴾ meaning: alone, ﴿is their protector﴾ meaning: the One who takes care of their affairs, not leaving them to anyone else. This indicates His closeness to them. The proximity indicates their closeness to Him due to what He has opened in their hearts with monotheism. And when that might have been limited to remembrance, it was clarified that the intended meaning of it is the guidance to actions, for they are the criterion of truth and its measure. So he said: ﴿by what﴾ meaning: because of what ﴿they used to do﴾ meaning: as He created them upon it. And that was only by His grace.
