And when he mentioned what he imposed on the people of misguidance with words that are detestable, it was very good that he followed it with the straight path. For it is something that is loved for its uprightness and its connection to the Lord, who has - along with the gathering of all perfections - the attributes of kindness, benevolence, and gentleness. And the connection of the Lord to this Messenger, who loves His creation and character, is such that everyone who sees him or hears of him is captivated. And better than that and more certain is that the substance of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: rajis] revolves around the disturbance that is inherent to the deviation that prevents faith. So when he represented - glorified and exalted is He - the state of the misguided with that of the disturbed, and informed that he imposed this disturbance on everyone who does not believe, he followed it with a description of his path with the uprightness that is the farthest thing from the disturbance inherent to deviation. And the estimation was: this is the state of the people of misguidance. So he followed it with his saying: 'And this' meaning: what we mentioned of the guiding laws in this Qur'an, which we concluded by stating that the sole guide who leads astray is Allah alone, not the coming with innovations, even if every verse came. 'The path' meaning: the way of 'your Lord' meaning: the One who is benevolent to you while this path is 'straight' meaning: there is no deviation in it at all. Rather, it is in accordance with the original nature, which is in the best form of sound reasoning that has not been tainted by desires nor has it been flawed in that all matters are in the hands of Allah, so that man does not cease to be fearful of Allah and hopeful in Him, for He is capable of everything. As for others, they have no power except by His decree, for He created the powers and abilities in us and in the Mu'tazilah. So let the particulars be likewise, for character cannot be conceived without knowledge, and no one except Allah encompasses knowledge. The Imam said: So the verse that precedes it is from the clear verses, and it is necessary to apply it according to its apparent meaning, and it is forbidden to manipulate it with interpretation.
And when all that is in this path is in accordance with reason, nothing of it is outside of it, even if there is in it what reason cannot independently grasp. Rather, it is necessary for it to have guidance from the guides among the messengers who take from Allah. He said, clarifying his praise and guiding to its alignment with reason: 'Indeed, We have detailed' meaning: to the utmost detail with what we have of greatness 'the verses' meaning: all of them, detailing them so that each one is distinguished in a way that does not mix one with another 'for a people who reflect' meaning: they exert themselves to rid themselves of the impurities that hinder reason from desires and others - even if it is on the slightest aspects of striving as indicated by the merging - so that they may remember [that he said: There is nothing we mentioned except that we have deposited in their minds a witness against it.
