Commentary
And when he established this, he followed it with a statement to them that indicates their glorification and arrogance. He said, adding to ﴿And they swore by Allah with all their might﴾ [Al-An'am: 109], in amazement at their condition regarding what has been adorned for them of their misguidance. This confirms what has previously been informed, that they do not believe even if all signs come to them except by the will of Allah. It also affirms what is in the previous verse regarding their plotting against others and its return upon themselves: ﴿And when a sign comes to them﴾ meaning: the disbelievers among the leaders of the criminals and their followers ﴿they say﴾ out of envy for whom Allah has chosen for prophethood due to their being leaders, affirming the denial [of the miracles of the prophets - peace be upon them - which are lessons that necessitate the belief of the most arrogant of the disbelievers]. ﴿We will never believe﴾ meaning: ever ﴿until we are given﴾ what we have of superiority and greatness that necessitates that no one is preferred over us by anything ﴿like what﴾.
And when their view was limited to the world of the senses without regard to the side of Allah due to it being unseen, they built for the action their saying: ﴿The messengers of Allah were given﴾ it is possible that the intended meaning is: until it is revealed to us so that they would not be greater than us - as He, the Exalted, said: ﴿Rather, every person among them wants to be given scrolls spread out﴾ [Al-Muddathir: 52]. And as has been previously mentioned at the beginning of the surah regarding Abu Jahl that he said: We disputed among ourselves and the Banu Abd Manaf over honor until when we were like two racing horses, they said: From us is a prophet who receives revelation from the heavens. (p-257) Woe to you! When will we attain this? By Allah, we will never believe in him. And it could be intended that he ﷺ be brought with similar signs to those of the earlier ones, such as the splitting of the sea, the hand, the staff, and the revival of the dead, and so forth. [And they referred to them in a derogatory manner, and they expressed it with the name of majesty as a reference to complete power, so there is no excuse].
And when he mentioned the name of majesty, indicating the enormity of what they dared upon due to their blindness - because of what has obscured the lights of their hearts from the darkness of desires - regarding what the messengers have of the majesty that causes the proud noses to bow - he repeated it also to emphasize the matter and to alert to the greatness of the status there. He said, in response to them regarding what their saying contained of the claim to learn wisdom and the objection to Allah - the Mighty and Majestic -: ﴿Allah﴾ meaning: with what He has of the attributes of perfection ﴿knows better﴾ meaning: than anyone from whom knowledge can be obtained ﴿where He places﴾ meaning: becomes by what He causes of matters ﴿His message﴾ meaning: all of it in relation to every individual among the creation, for He does not place anything of it according to desire.
And when this composition revealed that they dared against it, and that they persisted in the ugliest of sins, disbelief, not for the sake of seeking evidence but due to the disease of envy, the soul longed to know what would befall them. So he said in response: ﴿They will be struck﴾ meaning: with a promise that there is no breaking of it. And he showed the place of the implicit statement in generalization and connection of the ruling by description, so he said: ﴿Those who have committed crimes﴾ meaning: they have severed what ought to be connected. ﴿Smallness﴾ meaning: humiliation due to lack of support. And when a thing is magnified by the greatness of its place, and whoever is of that thing, he said: ﴿With Allah﴾ meaning: the One who encompasses the attributes of greatness. ﴿And a punishment﴾ meaning: with humiliation. ﴿Severe﴾ meaning: in this world by killing and disgrace, and in the Hereafter by the Fire. ﴿Because﴾ meaning: because of what ﴿they used to plot﴾.
