Commentary

And when it was known that their enmity towards him, blessings and peace be upon him, is indicated by His saying: ﴿And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy﴾ [Al-An'am: 112], the verse cannot be upheld except by the greatest of people. This is due to the grandeur of his position, the honor of his tribe, and the abundance of his relatives. No one persists in it except a fool, blinded in insight, adorned with his vile deeds. Therefore, the Most High has referred to the adornment for the disbelievers in His saying: ﴿And thus﴾, meaning: similar to what We have adorned for the disbelievers their evil deeds. The greatest of the people of Mecca would scheme, and others would follow their schemes. ﴿We have made﴾, meaning: by what We possess of greatness in establishing the causes that elevate the status of a person or make him of little consequence ﴿in every village﴾, meaning: in every gathering place. And when arrogance varies in types according to the different individuals of the criminals, it corresponds with the acts of preference intended for them in the plural in one of the languages. And it was expressed in the form of the utmost plural to indicate their extremity in number, so He said: ﴿the greatest of its criminals﴾, meaning: those who sever what should be connected.

And when it is the nature of man to seek the causes of his elevation for himself, and he cannot attain that in the abode of binding the causes with the wisdom of the causes except through scheming, and the great ones are more capable of executing the schemes and promoting falsehoods due to the majority of people striving for their approval, hoping for what is with them. And man, the more he is able to do that, the more he indulges in it. And the great one only reaches what has been decreed for him of that by the decree of Allah; it is as if it has been created for him. So He said, expressing by the making of what is in it of shaping and causing: ﴿to scheme in it﴾, meaning: to deceive their juniors and entice them with what they dress upon them of matters until they follow them and become enemies to the party of Allah.

And when that was painful, angering, and saddening, he said, belittling their affair and diminishing their matter: "And they" meaning: while they [do] "plot only against themselves" because their action of plotting is a burden upon them, a destruction for them. And their plotting against the allies of Allah is indeed plotting against Allah, and that is not achievable nor possible in any way. How can the plotting of one who knows nothing of the unseen be successful against the One who knows all of the unseen! "And they do not perceive" meaning: they have no type of awareness that their plotting returns upon themselves; because Allah, the Exalted, who knows their secrets and their public, makes their destruction through what He adorns for them in their planning. And He only enacted His divine tradition in that due to what it includes of the signs of prophethood. For indeed, the dominance of one person - whether alone or by the following of many of them who are not cared for, along with the fewness of numbers and weakness of support for the leaders of the people and their strong ones, while he remains among them, opposing them, calling out to them that your religion will be erased and my religion will prevail, even if you dislike it - is among the extraordinary occurrences and clear signs, confirming His saying, the Exalted: "Allah has decreed: I will surely overcome, I and My messengers" [Al-Mujadila: 21] "And indeed, Our soldiers will be the victorious" [As-Saffat: 173] in such matters.
