Commentary
And when the meaning of warning against the obedience of the polytheists is that if you do so, you have returned yourselves to the darkness of misguidance after you have been granted the light of guidance - the estimation was: Is he who is like this equal to one who advises himself by following the evidence and avoiding doubts? He then adds to it his saying: "Or is one who was dead" meaning: drowned in the waves of the darkness of disbelief, having nothing of themselves except for lifelessness, rather nonexistence. "So We gave him life" meaning: by what we have of greatness by illuminating the lights of faith upon his heart, which if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. "And We made" meaning: by our greatness specifically for him "a light" meaning: guidance to every good. "He walks" illuminated "by it among the people" so they recognize his actions, morals, and words. "Is he like one whose example is" meaning: the one who is represented by it, and it is what is revealed by the likeness of the essence of his soul and the essence of the state of his heart. Or the meaning could be: his description is that he "is in darkness" meaning: what he has of himself from the darkness of ignorance and the darkness of what arises from desires and the darkness of what arises from desires of disbelief. And if the example that is the highest of the represented in something, the represented is deeply rooted in it by priority, for that reason it was said: "He is not outside" meaning: that example "from it" meaning: the darknesses by which he was adorned with his evil deeds until they became more beloved to him than himself and his wealth. And if the example does not exit from something, the represented does not exit from it, otherwise there would not be a similarity between them, and that is because his deeds were adorned for him. And it is looking at his saying at the beginning of the Surah: "Indeed, only those who listen will respond, and the dead will be resurrected by Allah" [Al-An'am: 36] and his saying: "And those who denied Our signs are deaf and dumb in the darknesses" [Al-An'am: 39].
And when the inspiration of the devils to their allies is something that necessitates the adherence to blindness, it is nothing but beautification of evils. Their state is something that astonishes greatly, as if it were said: If it were not for our seeing their state, we would not have believed that a rational person would be pleased with what they have done to themselves. Has anyone ever experienced a state like theirs? It was said: Yes, "Thus" meaning: like what was beautified for them of their evil deeds "was beautified for the disbelievers" meaning: all of them "what they were" by what we created them upon "doing". So they are forever in the darknesses. The verse is from the intertwining: it first established his being in the darknesses as evidence for his estimation, and secondly, the beautification is evidence for his estimation first.
