Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, presented what has passed of the offerings and what is with them, and in the table spread of what the people of ignorance practice in eating the animals that have been drawn into polytheism. He followed that with a clarification that there is no harm upon the people of faith from the religion of the people of misguidance if they are guided. He followed that with what is suitable for it, and it was integrated into its context, until it became evident that everything belongs to Him, and that He has no partner. Therefore, it is obligatory to thank Him alone. Yet, they had disbelieved in His blessings, exalted is He, and took partners with Him. That was not enough for them until they made for it from what He created of crops and livestock a share. Thus, they were preventing the truth from its people and granting what He had bestowed upon them to one who does not own harm or benefit, and leaving some of what the Owner of the truth had blessed them with for the sake of one who has no right or sanctity. And the tradition of Allah, exalted is He, had been established that He mentions His noble self with oneness. This is evidenced by the creation of the heavens and the earth and what He has placed in them for us of benefits and what He has innovated of facilities and industries. Then He marvels at those who associate partners with Him. Then He commands to eat from what He has created as a reminder of the blessing, so that this may be a call for everyone with understanding to thank Him. As He, exalted is He, said in Al-Baqarah following: "And your God is one God" [Al-Baqarah: 163] "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth" [Al-Baqarah: 164]. Then He said, "And among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals" [Al-Baqarah: 165]. Then He said, "O mankind, eat from what is in the earth, lawful and good" [Al-Baqarah: 168]. He established this noble tradition in this Surah as well, saying: "Indeed, Allah is the splitter of the grain and the seed" [Al-An'am: 95] after "Indeed, I have directed my face toward He who created" [Al-An'am: 79]. Then He said, "And they made for Allah partners from the jinn" [Al-An'am: 100], indicating that He has no partner in His dominion or ownership. He concluded by stating that there is no judge besides Him who disputes with Him in His judgment or rivals Him in any of His affairs. And He clarified that among the signs is the guidance which He made a condition for the absence of harm that may befall from the religion of the people of polytheism. Thus, He caused all of what I mentioned to lead to His saying: "So eat from what has been mentioned" meaning: at the time of slaughtering, "the name of Allah" meaning: the King who has complete encompassing, for to Him belongs everything. "Upon it" means: as if the speaker of that is the same whether mentioned by action or not. And He deviated from the expression by what I have made intended to be understood that the mention by action is recommended. And they should not be among those who built their religion on following whims and false assumptions. So it is as if it were said: Follow the one who knows the truth for its people, for he is guided, not deviating to others, for he is astray. And Allah knows best of the two groups. So be among the guided, and eat from what Allah has created for you that is lawful, thanking for His blessing. And He has prolonged here - unlike Al-Baqarah - the discourse between the sentences to affirm its contents and what follows it, and to argue for all of that because it is the Surah of detail. And He mentioned the intended acceptance of the food for it, meaning: eat from what can be called upon it according to what He has legislated. And that is what He has made lawful from animals and others, whether it is from what they have made for their idols or not, except for what died by itself, or was mentioned upon it the name of other than Allah, or was from what is prohibited to eat even if it was slaughtered and the name of Allah was mentioned upon it. For it does not accept permissibility by the mention, as the mention is in the wrong place, due to the texts that have come with prohibition. And do not follow the polytheists in their preventing themselves from the good of what Allah has created for them from crops and livestock by their naming it for their deities, which have no benefit in them. And this would be an encouragement for the mention upon all lawful food, so that the verse would be like the verse of Al-Baqarah [with an addition].
And when this matter cannot be accepted except by one whose heart has removed the religion of polytheism and all its followers from it - he said: "If you are" meaning: by what you have of the good nature, "by His signs" (p-243) meaning: generally, which among them are the verses of permissibility and prohibition, "believers" meaning: deeply rooted in the description of faith.
