Commentary
And when the decree was: Leave them so that the hearts of those who believe in the Hereafter turn away from them, and so that they may be displeased with it, and so that they may know what they are seeing and knowing about it. Thus, their ranks are raised by this. He added to it His saying: 'And let them incline' meaning: they lean strongly, turning away by it 'towards it' meaning: their lies and what is in the realm of it. 'The hearts' meaning: the hearts of 'those who do not believe in the Hereafter' meaning: it is not in their nature to believe in it because it is unseen, and they are stuck in their homeland with delusion. Therefore, the world, which is the essence of deception, has taken control over them. 'And let them be pleased with it' meaning: with what has taken hold of their inclination towards it. 'And let them commit' meaning: they do by their efforts 'what they are committing.' And these sentences - as Abu Hayyan pointed out - are of the utmost eloquence; for first, there is deception, then there is inclination, then there is pleasure, and then there is the act of committing. It is as if each one is caused by what precedes it.
