And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established these signs in these clear verses until He concluded them with what He knew of them regarding their haste to insult the one who did good to them by creating them and providing for them everything in the universe. And there is no blessing upon them except that it is from Him. He was astonished by them in their promise of faith in a manner of emphasis by what they would propose to Him, informing that this is from what has been adorned for them of their deeds. And it is a false wish and a broken oath. So He said, adding to the saying, "And they made partners for Allah, the jinn" [Al-An'am: 100] "And they swore" meaning: the polytheists "by Allah" meaning: the one who is greater than Him "with the utmost of their oaths" meaning: exerting their utmost effort in it until it is as if it is striving. And He prepared for the oath by saying: "If a sign comes to them" meaning: from their proposals, and He received the oath with the saying: "They will surely believe in it."

And when they were unjust in this because they requested from the Messenger what was not for him after he had come to them with miracles that removed their excuses and made it obligatory upon them to follow - He alerted to that with His saying, beginning anew: "Say" meaning: in response to their obstinacy "The signs are only with Allah" meaning: the one who possesses all attributes of perfection, and there is nothing of this kind for me or for anyone else to benefit the proposal in anything other than His anger.

And when the servant, due to his inability, has no power over anything at all, it is not correct for him to judge regarding what is coming at all, neither from his actions nor from the actions of others. He said, denying them while turning to their address, indicating that they are deserving of confrontation with reproach: "And what" meaning: and what thing "can inform you" meaning: the slightest indication of what you swore regarding faith when it comes to them until they imagine it the slightest imagination, let alone certainty, so how about with certainty, especially regarding this matter! Then He explained the question with the saying, clarifying that there is no benefit in bringing the proposed sign: "That it" with the opening in the recitation of Nafi and Ibn Amer and Shu'ba in a narration from him, and Hafs and Hamza and Al-Kisai. It was as if it was said: I denied you because "when it comes, they will not believe" in the address in the recitation of Ibn Amer and Hamza, and the turning to the third person in the recitation of others to inform that they are far from faith, so they are worthy of being turned away from due to what they have deserved of anger. And the explanation for those who broke "that it" is clear.
