Commentary
And when the incitement against what they have taken besides Him from partners and daughters became prolonged; because they are less than that and more insignificant - this perhaps was a cause for cursing them. So He prohibited it due to the great corruption that cursing brings about. He said, adding to His saying ﴿And turn away from the polytheists﴾ [Al-An'am: 106] without confronting him alone ﷺ out of honor for him: ﴿And do not curse﴾. And when the idols do not comprehend, and the polytheists claim that they possess intellect and knowledge, attributing actions to them, He conducted the speech according to their claim because it is about refraining from them. He said: ﴿Those who invoke﴾, meaning: the invocation of worship from the idols or others, by mentioning what is in them of deficiency. Then He clarified, in order to dispel the assumption of honoring them, that they are in a lowly state by saying: ﴿Besides Allah﴾, meaning: the Supreme King who has no equal, justly, with knowledge from you of what they have of defects. Rather, they turned away from their invocation to Allah, even from cursing their deities for what they deserve. Indeed, We adorned for them their deeds, so they drowned with the abundance of their intellects in what no sane person would accept, and they denied all the signs that necessitate faith. Perhaps your cursing them - due to what they have of the ignorance of pre-Islamic fervor - would lead to that which is not appropriate ﴿So they will curse﴾, meaning: it would cause them to curse ﴿Allah﴾, meaning: the One you invoke, and He encompasses the attributes of perfection. And He made clear the intended meaning and the greatness of this, and the terror of it, and the aversion from it.
And when the act of cursing necessitates haste - He indicated to it - glorified and exalted is He - by saying: ﴿In haste﴾, meaning: running to cursing; and when the running may occur with knowledge, He clarified that it is intended with haste that it exceeds the limit: ﴿Without knowledge﴾, because We adorned for them their deeds. So, if obedience necessitates the existence of a great wrongdoing, it is avoided even if the situation leads to abandoning it for a time, in order to gain strength to repel that wrongdoing. Thus, the ruling of the verse remains and is not abrogated.
And when that was severe on the soul, constricting the chest, the situation necessitated that it be said: Is this adornment specific to these criminals or was it for others among the nations like it? It was said: ﴿Thus﴾, meaning: rather, it was for others besides them, for indeed, like that adornment which We adorned for these ﴿We adorned for every nation﴾, meaning: a great group intended ﴿their deeds﴾, meaning: the evil that they have engaged in without knowledge of what He created in their hearts of love for Him, as a response from Us to them after sound intellect, the lowest of the low, until they saw as good what is not good, to demonstrate Our power; thus, it was in that the greatest consolation, and imitation, and comfort, and the verse from the intertwining: the affirmation of ﴿Without knowledge﴾ first indicates the omission of it second, and the affirmation of the adornment second is evidence of the omission of it first.
And when He - glorified and exalted is He - is long-suffering and possesses great forbearance, and the delay may sometimes be due to ignorance of the actions of the sinner, He negates that by His saying: "Then" meaning: after a long delay "to their Lord" meaning: the One who is gracious to them with forbearance regarding them while they rely on His blessings for their sins, not to anyone else. "Their return" meaning: at the greatest gathering "and He will inform them" meaning: He will inform them with a great and profound informing "of what" meaning: of all that "they used to do" meaning: in a manner of renewal and continuity with what is in their natures that drives them towards it [even if they claim that they are acting according to knowledge].
