Commentary

And when the beloved concealed something that would increase his beloved, he said, comforting him ﷺ about their mockery of him and their rejection of his words, adding to what is meant by it: So if Allah had willed, they would not have opposed you nor spoken about you with a word: ﴿And if Allah had willed, they would not have associated partners﴾. This means that what occurred from them was not originally associating partners. Indeed, He intended for you from their falling into you what He intended for Himself, so let that be a comfort for you.

And when the meaning is: Indeed, He, glorified and exalted is He, is a guardian over them, He added to His saying: ﴿And We did not make you﴾, meaning: by Our greatness, and indicated that exaltation is not by anyone other than Allah - glorified is He - and He said: ﴿A guardian over them﴾, meaning: He preserves their deeds so that there is nothing among them that does not please Us, and He diverts them from it by force. ﴿And you are not﴾, and He preceded what is more general than the negation of the realization of the encompassing, overpowering exaltation that is specific to the deity, and He said: ﴿A guardian over them﴾, meaning: He takes the truth from them by force, and deals with them according to what they deserve, whether good or evil. You are merely a messenger from Us, then the matter of their guidance and misguidance is with Us.
