Commentary
And when hope was cut off for the guidance of the one who judged by his misery, and their request for the descent of the angel and similar matters was merely for the sake of obstinacy and mockery, and that was extremely difficult for the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and the believers, may Allah be pleased with them - the soul turned to relief from them and anticipated it due to the previous manifestations of greatness. So he informed him that he would do that in a context that would provide him comfort, and that this had always been His way with those who acted as they did. He said - referring to his saying: "So news will come to them" [Al-An'am: 5] -: "And certainly" this from them is merely mockery of you. "And certainly mockery was made" meaning mockery was inflicted and existed from the nations, and it was built for the passive form because the essence of mockery is not being from a specific one, indicating that it was occurring for them from both the high and the low, "by messengers."
And when closeness in time in such a matter is something that brings comfort, and both mockery and sending did not take a long time, he introduced the conjunction and said: "Before you" and We destroyed those who mocked them, and this is the meaning of "and it encompassed" meaning it surrounded "those who mocked them" meaning from those messengers "what they were mocking" meaning from the punishment that they were threatening with, and it was the reason for their mockery.
